EXPENSIVE MUSHROOMS.
INCREASES IN PRICE
POSITION IN WELLINGTON
[BY TEtECIIAPIt. —OWN COnUESI'ONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Monthly.
Two years ago mushrooms could be bought in Wellington for about 4d a lb.
To-day, if mushrooms are fancied, tho purchaser must pay at least 2s 6d a lb. for them, and ho can pay as much as 3s 6d.
The change, said a small farmer near Wellington, was due to the fact that tho Chinese greengrocers were adopting new methods. Mushrooms gathered by the farmer had virtually no sale. Years ago they were bought at a small price and sold at a small price. To-day, tho Chinese went mushrooming in their motorcars in the early morning and gathered small Supplies which were retailed from 2s 6d a lb.
The farmer alleged that other centres were beginning to suffer in the same way, and that the farmer who had a mushroom " crop " had now to use them in his own frying-pan—unless he arrived too late.
