MAN DIES IN HOSPITAL.

A fatal motor accident occurred on the Hamilton-Morrinsvillo Road, near Newstead, at 10 o'clock last evening when a young man was fatally injured and a young woman was seriously hurt.

The victims of the accident were:—

Mr. Thomas Barton Shaw, aged 23, a single man, who died later in the Waikato Hospital from head injuries.. Miss Winifred Handle, aged 19, who received a fracture of the skull. Iler condition is serious.

Mr. Shaw was the son of Mr. David Shaw, farmer, of Tauwhare, and Miss Randle is the daughter' of Mr. P. Handle, assistant manager of the Matangi Glaxo

factory. The accident was the result of a head-on collision between a motor-car driven by Mr. 11. Shaw, a cousin of the deceased, and occupied by Mr. T. Shaw, Mr. T. Brown, and Miss Randle, and a car driven by Mr. L. 11. Monteith, of Eureka, who was accompanied by his brother, Mr. A. F. Monteith. Mr. Shaw was driving in the direction of Hamilton and Mr. Monteith and his brother were returning home after attending a football practice in Hamilton. The accident occurred on a straight stretch of road, about four miles from Hamilton.

Mr. Shaw and Miss Randle received shocking injuries to the head, and Mr. Shaw died in th 9 Waikato Hospital at 3.30 a.m. to-day. Both were sitting in the back of the car at the time of the collision, the force of which caused Mr. Shaw's car to turn a completo somersault. Foggy conditions prevailed at the time. Except for bruises and shock no ono else was injured. Both cars were wrecked. An inquest concerning the death of Mr. Shaw was opened before the coroner, Mr. VVyvern Wilson, S.M., this afternoon, and was adjourned until to-morrow.
