FRUITGROWERS' COUNCIL.
VALUE OF ADVERTISING
ELECTION OF OFFICERS.
Tho annual meeting of . the Auckland Provincial Fruitgowers' Council was held yesterday, tho president, Mr. S. W. House, presiding .over a'good attendance. In his report, the chairman said that the result of tho examination of students attending the evening horticultural classes at tho Auckland Technical College was most satisfactory. A largo number of students was taking the course this year. Referring to the advertising and marketing of fruit, Mr. House said tho council and the executive, the retailers and the brokers were in favour of fruit advertising. It was hoped that a satisfactory basis would be reached, but it was felt that. standardisation was the basis of an-effective scheme.
.The. dates, of .the Agricultural and Pastoral show, from February 27 to March 1, were too early for the later fruits and too late for tho soft fruits, with the lesult that after much effort no exhibition had been made this year. It was. felt that the value of shows a3 a means of advertising was not fully appreciated by the growers At the recent, citrus conference at 'Mildura the North Island of •Now Zealand was stated to he the natural market for lemons and oranges from Australia. The Commonwealth had since placed an embyrgo on the imputation of New Zealand lemons. This matter would require attention. Several remits wore approved for consideration at the..forth coming Dominion Conference. One from the Citrus Grow,er|' Association, Tauranga, was a request for protection for lemons and Pour Man's oranges by the imposition of extra duty or by the prevention of dumping. Another was to the effect that some protection should be sought against the importation of soft fruits at any time when New Zealand could fully supply the local demands.
