The, Mount Roskill branch of the League of Mothers held a well-attended meeting recently, at which Dr. Margaret Knight gave an instructive lecture on cancer in its earliest stages.

Miss M. Hevwood. of Remtiera, is spendin? a few weeks in Loudon before go:ng abroad some time this month, writes our London correspondent on April 4. She hopes to make a fairly long stay in Italy and to return to England via Switzerland. Miss Heyweod will probably be a year in Europe.

A very successful flag bridge evening was held at the residence of Mrs. Parsons, Waingaro. Home made sweets were in much demand, and a sales table was very popular. The proceeds arc to be given to the institute's benevolent fund, and a portion to be sent to the obstetrical appeal fund.

Miss Muriel Harvey, formerly of the 'Auckland Hospital nursing staff, is at present in America, where she is studying laboratory and X-ray work at St. John's Hospital, Springfield. Miss Harvev, with a friend, recently completed a motor tour from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic, covering 1000 miles without one puncture.

Miss Zoa Miller cave a party recently to the-pupils of the Ladies' College, Bemuera, and other girl friends. Competitions, races and games were arranged by th§ Misses Moore-Jones, Madame Creugnet, ..nd Miss Wibbelv, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. Tea was served on the lawn and afterwards prizes •were distributed by Miss Zoo Miller and Miss Rave Brewin.

A dance was given on Thursday evening by the Devonport sub-branch of the Navy League for the ships' companies of the warships which are in port. Supper was served by the ladies' committee, who were as follows Mrs. H. Melvin, Mrs. Palmer, - Mrs. Cleal, Mrs. Stokes. Miss •Melville, Miss Doris Cleland, Miss Woods, Miss Parker, Miss Tatton, Miss Spraggon, Mils Redmond, Miss Johnston, Miss Wyatt and Miss Bertrand.

A largely-attended meeting of the St. Heliers branch cf the League of Mothers ■was held in the Peerless Theatre on Tuesday, Mrs. St. Clair Inglis presiding. "Home" was the subject of Mrs. Maguire's speech. She enumerated all that home embraced, dwelling on the great part a mother played in it. Mrs. Guiver, one of the members, also spoke. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Brookfield.

The annual meeting of the Bayswater"Belmont Women's Society was held on Thursday in the clubhouse at Bayswater, Mrs. F. E. N. Gaudin presiding. The hon. .Mrs. Rabbidge, read the report, and the hon. treasurer, Mrs. Thomas, gavi the statement of accounts. The officers for the ensuing year are as follows: —President, Mrs. F. E. N. Gaudin (re-elected); vice-presidents. Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Francis; hon. secretary, Mrs. L. L. Rabbidge; hon. treasurer, Mrs. W G. Thomas; committee, Mesdames Brady, Blampied, Waddell, Collinson, R. Harrison, Rambaud, Powell, McDuff and 'A. Gyde. It was decided that meetings bhould be h?ld to sew for the Brett home and supply the children with clothes and A sum of £25 8s was realised on Poppy Day. It was decided to send a. donation of £2 2s to the Auckland City Mission.

The ..Otahuhu parish hall was gaily tfecorated with streamers, balloons and chrysanthemums on Wednesday evening, ivhen a number of her girl friends gave a kitchen evening for Miss Maijoiie Pearce, nrho is shortly to be married. The evening's entertainment consisted of dancing and novelty items. The organisers of the party were Miss Ivy Tucker, Miss Kathleen Todd. Miss Ethel Todd, Misses Nina and I. Aickin. Musical numbers were given by Miss I. Tucker. Mrs. A. Todd, Miss F. Bavistock and Miss 0. Tucker. About 60 guests gathered at. the residence of Mrs. T. J. Flood, in Huia Road, Otahuhu, on Thursday evening, at another kitchen-evening given for Miss M. Pearce. The guests were welcomed by Mr. and Mrs. Flood and Miss Pearce, and a very cheery evening was spent with competitions, musical items and dancing. A huge cracker was wheeled into the drawing room and opened by Miss Pearce and Mr. A. Meredith, the contents being the gifts brought by the guests. Vocal and instrumental items were given by Mesdames Turner, Walters, Miss Hewson and Mr. G. W, Venables.
