SECOND-HAND MOTOR-CARS.
GREAT DEMAND IN SYDNEY.
EFFECT OF DEPRESSION
One of the surprises of the period in Sydney, says the correspondent of the Melbourne Argus, is the improved position of the second-hand car on the market. It can almost treat the new car with disrespect. A fqw months ago second-hand cars could bo picked up at "Paddy's Market" prices. Not so now. There is a large and increasing demand for them.
"Don't you notice that city firms specialising in the salo of second-hand cars are actually advertising for more," asked one associated with this business. "The reason is not difficult to divine. Thousands who wish for cars cannot pay the prico of new ones. There are, of course, many who ran, for this is a rich community, but the majority have to consider their resources as never before, and thus it is that their thoughts turn to second-hand cars instead of new ones. A man can obtain now £250 for a secondhand car that six months ago would not have commanded more than £l5O. Other cars of lower and higher grade are in proportion." These comments were confirmed in other quarters. The trade is not downhearted. The men who are buying second hand cars—many of them beginners at motoring—will buy new ones when tho sun shines again, as every one knows it must ero long. Meantime cars that a little while ago would have been classified at garages as "junk" are bringing useful sums of money to their owners."
