ANZAC DAY OBSERVANCE.
MANUFACTURERS' VIEWS. NEAREST SUNDAY FAVOURED. A discussion aroso at tlio meeting of the. general comnntteo of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association yesterday, out of a letter from tlio New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation, asking for an expression of opinion regarding the observance of Anzac Day. It was-stated that as Anzac Day tended to bo regarded more as a holiday while observed on a week day, its purposo would bo bettor served if it wero observed on a Sunday. Mr. J. Mills-Palmer said tho 1 question should bo decided by tho majority of the people and not by a small group. From what lio could gather tlio greater proportion of tho public was in favour of its observance 011 Sunday. Certainly tho labouring and business classes objected to having a holiday in tho middlo of tho week, owing to the financial loss. Tho chairman, Mr. G. Finn, said 110 thought most people would support Mr. Mills-Palmer. Anzac Day on a weekday was a cosily anniversary. Mr. W. 11. V.'Taine also supported Mr. Mills-Palmer, who moved that in view of tho fact that Anzac Day was essentially a day of reverent commemoration, and not a holiday in the ordinary sense, tho association strongly recommended that in future the occasion bo commemorated on the nearest Sunday. The resolution was carried.
