REPERTORY THEATRE.
SHAKESPEARE EVENING. The personality of Shakespeare as reflected in his works was outlined by Sir. J. W. Shaw at the Shakespearean evening arranged by the Everyman Repertory Theatre Society on Saturday evening. Mr. Shaw said that when Shakespeare went to London he naturally drifted to the theatre, lie traced the development of Shakespeare from his first position of being somewhat in the nature of an extra stage hand, remodelling unsuccessful plays. Then came his finest phase of playwritiii" and the stage of depression wher, some serious trouble must have coine into his life, and finally the glorious sunset of his last work. i!r. Shaw's address was followed by Shakespearean songs, sung by Miss Winifred Hill and Miss V. Hutcheson. The third scene of the first act of "The Merchant of Venice" was given, Sir. A. G. Quartely taking the part of Antonio, Sir. Godfrey Killing playing Bassanio and Sir. Andrew Beresl'ord Shylock. Sir. i Ueresford also gave a recitation of tlie first throne room scene from "Hamlet."
