STRANDED STEAMER.
NO DAMAGE APPARENT.
ANOTHER VESSEL CHARTERED
[BT TELEGRAPH. —OWN- CORRESPONDENT.]
NELSON, Thursday
The officials of the Anchor Shipping Company stated to-day, regarding the steamer Alexander, which ran aground at the French Pass early on Tuesday morning while on the way from Wellington to Nelson, that the vessel was expected to float off within a few days, on the making tide. She will then proceed to Wellington for Government inspection before continuing to run. No damage to the hull is apparent at present.
The Anchor Company has chartered the Richardson Company's steamer Jumbor, and this vessel will be employed in the Nelson-Mapua and Nclson-Motneka fruit trade. It is expected that the vessel will be available on Saturday. Captain McMillan, at present in command of the Nikau, will be transferred to the Jumbar, Captain O'Donnell, of the Te Aroha, will take command of the Nikau, and Captain Ilugau, chief oflicer of the Nikau, will command the Te Aroha. It is hoped that with the early refloating of the Alexander and the assistance of the Jumbar the fruit industry, both local and export, will have an improved service.
