TRACK WORK AT TE RAPA.

VERTIGERN ON THE SCENE

USEFUL TASKS PERFORMED

Very few of the visiting horses to compete at the Waikato Racing Club's meeting, opening 011 Saturday, had reached the scene this morning, hut a number arrived during tlio day. Vertigern and Count Palatine, members of W. D. Moroncy's team, arrived from Featherston thin morning, and were exercised at Te Rapa in tho afternoon. Both look well, but Count Palatine may bo in need of a raco. B. H. Morris will rido this pair 011 Saturday. For this morning's work tho intermittent rain-showers which had fallen sinco yesterday had caused tlio track to chip out a little on the top, but the going on tho course proper with tho trestles about COft. out from tho rails was good. Glenison, Crown Arch, Indolent and Miss Albyn, members of A. E. Cox's team, were the first out, and ran five furlongs jn l.tO. Tho Lamb, who will bo ridden by J. Burgess in tho hurdles 011 Saturday, was given serviceable work on tho No. 1 grass.

Mosaic's Good EfTort. Pompeius, who is to have H. Gray's services in the High-weight on Saturday, moved freely in his exerciso oti tho inside grass. Gleno. Bay did serviceable work. Ho will be ridden in tho hurdles on Saturday by E. Garrett, who was successful on him at Whangarei. Mosaic (E. Tuoliey) was well clear of Rawhetu (P. M. Brady) over a. round in 2.0. Tuohey will rido Mosaic in tho Storey Memorial Cup and J. G'ammick will bo on Rawhetu. Rawhetu is not a good trackworkor, while Mosaic invariably goes freely, but has not acted up to it in his races this season. 1

I'm Alono was exercised, no is doing well since coming to the Waikato. Mangu King nnd Beiln, Maiden Stakes candidates, ran threo furlongs in 40 2-ss, tho former being in front at the post. Red Day, having all tho better of the start, did not let Antiquo near her in running seven furlongs, tho final six in 1.22. Red Day is working well, and Antique looks to have improved since Ohinemuri. Mervetto was doing it much better thnn Ruling Chief at tho end of eix furlongs in 1.22.

Two-year-olds at Work. Tho twc-year-olds King Ford, Holly Holm, nnd Bean Irish finished in that order over half a mil,», in 51s. King Ford's early speed was an advantage. Tradesman, Imamint and Sargon, with Stonehengo to accompany them, ran tho straight threo furlongs from the milo nnd n-half starting barrier. They moved off well and finished as named, tho tiino being 3C3. Tradesman went on for another furlong.

Gold Day handled himself freely in his work, without being asked for his best. Foreign Fancy and Volimond had little between them, with Lucky Alico beaton off, at the end of six furlongs, in 1.21.

There was little between Macroom, Sir Russell and Flying Juliet at tho finish of five furlongs, in a tick over 1.7.

Wiltshiro, who led Always, was timed to run the last half-milo of his work in 575.

Wenday was always doing it better than Hipo over seven furlongs in 1.37. Wenday, who is not engaged on Saturday, i 3 showing steady improvement.

Honiton, Mosque and Pugo Boy, who finished as named, ran the last half-milo of their work in 555.

Lady Quex and Valuation.

Lady Quex (C. Goulsbro) was too good for another New Plymouth candidato in Te Atiawa. Lady Quex ran . the last four of five furlonga in 555. ,

Royal Finance ran six furlongs in 1.22 2-5. Valuation (A. Tinker) ran <ho last threo furlongs of his task in 435. Ho will bo more suited by the going since the rain. Daylight and Intent ran three furlongs in 41 3-ss.

Lady's Boy ran five hirlonge comfortably in 1.13

Glenstar was 6ent over four fences down the back of the course. Ho jumped the first two in good stvle, but ran off at the third. He was taken back and negotiated this fence well, but ran off at the fourth, being once more taken back to do his job correctly, P. Foster will rido him on Saturday. Town Bird was sent over four hurdles. Apart from getting in too close and rapping the two final obstacles, ho gave an exhibition of fast jumping.

MAIDEN STAKES RACE. TO BE RUN IN DIVISIONS. Owing to the large number of acceptors, the' Maiden Stakes, to he decided at the Wc.ikato Racing Club's Autumn Meeting tomorrow, has had to bo divided. Jho divisiona are as follows: MAIDEN STAKES, Of £100; 6 fur.

PEGAWAY SCRATCHED. Pegaway v?w scratched for tho Presidents Handicap at 11.30 a.m. on Wednesday.

HIPO'S 209 RACES

COMPETING AGAIN TO-MORROW.

Hipo, who is to raco in tho Storey Memorial Cup to-morrow, is the veteran of tho field, and. indeed, is tho oldest horse engaged at tho meeting. Ho is 11 years old, and, making his debut on tho turf in tho early spring of 1020. he has up to tho present contested no fewer than 209 laces for 21 wins, 32 seconds and 2G thirds, being unplaced in 117 races. His stake-winnings amount to .£10,731. Hipo's be.st season was at five yearu old, when he scored seven victories, including tho Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. This season he has had only one win-tho Te Kuiti Cup. Hipo has been a frequent snd successful visitor to Hamilton, and as long ago as February, 1922, was a competitor at Claudelands. On that occasion ho won the Cambridge Handicap, six furlongs, being tho rank outsider in a field of nine.

PAGANELLI'S TRAINING. Paganelli is among the active workers at To Rapa. In a gallop on tho plough the other morning ho displayed his customary burst of speed. Paganelli is not engaged at tho Waikato meeting tomorrow. but he has been nominated for tho sprint event on Monday. WEBSTER'S RIDES TO-MORROW. Tho southern lightweight jockey, T. Webster, will be riding at Te Rapa. His mounts to-morrow will bo Kingsland, King Ford. Prince of Orange, Red Day, Luminary and Kingfield.
