COMFORT ON RAILWAY.
THE NEW ROTORUA TRAINS.
OPERATION AFTER EASTER. The new carriages to be used on the Auckland-Rotorua railway service will come into use soon after Easter. Sixteen carriages, each of a type hitherto not seen on the New Zealand railways, have been constructed at the Otahuhu workshops and successful trial runs have been made. Everything is now ready for the initiation of the new luxury service, but as reservations of seats on the ordinary Rotorua expresses have been made weeks in advance by intending passengers, the Railway Department has decided to postpone the introduction of the new service until after the Easter rush.
The chief object in building the new carriages is to offer the travelling public, particularly visitors to Rotorua, comfortable accommodation designed to compete with the growing motor traffic. The seats in the first-class cars are capable of adaptation to three positions, namely, day, semi-lounge and total recline. Vestibules replace the open platforms and the windows are frameless, opening like those of a motor-car. Observation cars, fitted with loungo chairs, will bo attached to each train.
