[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH. Friday.

Fatal burns were received -by Mrs Marjorie Willett blather, wife of Mr. Charles P. Mather, as tho result of a can of petrol exploding and setting fire to some straw in a slied at the rear of a dwelling in Montreal Street this morning. Mrs. Mather occupied the upstairs flat at the house. She was severely burned through her clothing catching alight, and was taken to hospital in a very critical condition. She died at 8.30 p.m.

It is stated that Mrs. Mather was looking for fuel in the shed and struck a match, which ignited petrol leaking from the can. Hearing her screams Miss H. M.
