MIDSUMMER MEETING.

TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME.

The Canterbury Jockey Club's Midsummer Meeting takes pluco to-day. Tho following ia the list of acceptances for the various events:

The weather promises to be fine and the track will be in better order than for many years at this stage of the season. The opening event, the Hornby Handicap, should provide an interesting race a3 all the candidates have been showing promising form lately and speculation will be well distributed. Quarterdeck. Don Jose •and Vvrigley may run well. Investors have an intricate problem to solve in the Trial Stakes. Strong support will be foi-thcoming for Ravine. Tariff and Swiftray.

The field for the Middle Park Plate cannot be considered strong but there is material for a keen contest. Xnewfable <3 a bold galloper and carries weight well. Aspiring has a, big burden for her size but if right again she should take part in the finish. Blue Metal ban been fairly consistent and cannot. bo overlooked. Jalou:: baa everything in his favour as far as weights aro concerned, but may suffer from inability 'to get away. It seems likely that Jaloux, Inevitaolo and Aspiring will bo prominent.

Tho six acceptors will he paraded for tho Midsummer Handicap. Rapier 3 resppearance will bo a pieasing feature. He has dona soma solid work during tho past few weeks and would bo a tough proposition at ilia best, but bo will require* some racing befcro carrying public confidence. Eoylako is to race in straps, a procedure that seemingly had good results in the case of Dolomite. Ho could not, bo produced in better order than just now. Tho issue appears much more open than the size of tho field would surest and in what should be a good race Pride, Topero and "Waterlino will probably carry most support.

There seems every possibility of Praise being saddled up ior the Lyttelfon Plate. Investors may not teel inclined to support her in- the face of her waywardness at IVingatui but she save no. trouble in barrier practice on "Wednesday. The pool will bo well divided and there may bo good support for Praise, Charmaine and Winsome Hind.

The field for the Craven Plata will probably be reduced by tha defections of Rapier, Pride and Dutch Money. Red Hecklo ha 3 been working very satisfactorily oi lata and can always bo depended upon to race well when fresh. Arrowmir, Silver Coot and Grcenaway should bo in most demand.

Tho biggest field of tha day will face tho starter in tho Halsweil Handicap, and rocent winning form is well represented. Ta Awhina, Ranelagh and Mount Boa are likely to bo well supported. In tho concluding event last year's winner, Buoyant, must again be seriously considered. as bo is in great order. Courtliko and Meprisant may cause him most troubio.

PAEROA ANNUAL MEETING.

Tho annual race meetiug at Paeroa promoted by the Ohinemuri Jockey Club has always maintained its popularity, and, with a programme showing prize-money to tho amount of £3650, tho approaching meeting, which is fixed to be held on Saturday and Monday, March 15 and 17, can bo depended upon to claim pointed attention from horseowners. Tho Ohinemuri Cup (1 mile 3 fur.), which appropriately stands out as tho leading event of the. programme, carries the good stake of £6OO, and tho Shaw Memorial Handicap (1 mile 110 yds) ia worth £350. Tho St. Patrick's Handicap and tho Paeroa Handicap, which are tho leading sprint events, aro respectively worth £3OO and £250. The jumping division ia, aa usual, catered for in most libetal fashion, two hnrdlo events and -Ji similar number of steeplechases each carrying a stake of £2OO. Fcam the programme, which will bo found published in full in. another column, it will bo seen that nominations for all events close at 8 p.m. next Wednesday, February 26, with tho secretary, Mr. H.
