STOPS EFFORT AT ESCAPE
. While in Wormwood Scrubbs Prison, cx-Stalion -Sergeant George Goddard has figured' in; *two incidents. Ho detected and frustrated an attempt to escape; and went to the aid of a warder who- was attacked by a prisoner. Goddard was thanked by tho governor, who awarded him special remission marks, which may shorten his term of 18 months' imprisoilThe ex-sergeant was in a cell adjoining that of an alien, when oil two successive nights he beard suspicious noises.' lie reported the incident to a warder and it was then found thai an attempt was being mado by tho other prisoner to loosen tho bars, of the cell by scraping awsiy parts of tho- masonry. Investigation revealed a plot to escapo by two prisoners. Shortly afterwards a member of a working party attacked a warder. Goddard ■went to' tho. warder's assistance and helped to overpower tho man. In prison Goddard has worked in tho carpenter's shop, tlw mail-bag department, and the stores, and has had excellent health.
