A MAGISTRATE'S OPINION.
Advice to mistresses'engaging maids was given by Mr. Hay Halkett, the Marylc-borie-magistrate, recently, ' whon Margaret Lewis was remanded on a charge of stealing a coat worth £2OO. A detective said tho girl left her situation as maid without notice, and a week later tho coat was missed.
Replying to the magistrate, Miss Christ ofoi ides, her mistress, said tho reference sho roceivod concerning tho girl was a very good one. It was a written reference.
Mr. lialkett: That, of course,., is useless. Any reference you may have got like that you might just As well tear up. Tho only socurily mistresses havo is a personal reference, and v even then- they want a personal reference concerning the person who gives tho rcferenca.
