THE MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE.
Sir, —The annual conference of local bodies is to be held this year at Inver cargill and councils are now appointing their delegates. Without belittling the admirable work carried out at these conferences, but looking at it from a business point of view, tho question arises: Does the small local body derive any benefit commensurate with the expense of sending delegates such a distance? For the large municipalities the questions debated are quite momentous, while the delegates' expenses are infinestimal compared with the revenue of the corporation. It is noted that one borough council has decided not to send delegates South this year. W T ith soaring rates and high valuations and so' much work left undone it is to be hoped that every little tiripot borough will not incur the relatively large expense of sending delegates to a conference so far from home. Ratepayer.
