VALUELESS CHEQUE CASHED.
TWO MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT
" The only thing to do is to sentence him to a term of imprisonment," said Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in tho Police Court yesterday, when he convicted Frederick Winter, aged 22, seaman, on a charge of obtaining £ls from a firm of motor dealers in Auckland on November 14 by means of a valueless chequo for that amount drawn on the Bank of New Zealand at Putaruru. Winter admitted tho offence.
According to Chief-Detective Hammond accused had been working for his hrothor-in-law in tho country and had stolen a cheque form from tho latter. Coming to tho city ho had filled it in and cashed it.
The magistrate imposed a sentenco of two months' imprisonment. A charge of being idle and disorderly in that he possessed insufficient lawful means of support was denied by Norman Batty, aged 30, soapmaker, who was stated by the polico to havo been sleeping in tho Domain and to havo been doing no work. In reply to tho magistrate accused said ho had a homo to go to. and was prepared to remain there. Ho was then convicted and discharged. '"Do not come before tho Court again, warned tho magistrate.
