DEATH OF MR. GARRARD.

SENIOR SCHOOL INSPECTOR.

SEQUEL TO BRIEF ILLNESS.

APPROACHING RETIREMENT.

Within a month of the date fixed for his retirement on superannuation Mr. C. W. Garrard, senior inspector of schools in the Auckland district, died suddenly last evening after a very short illness. Mr. Garrard recontly completed 47 years' service with the Education Department and it was announced last month that he would retire on March 31. Ho was in his 62nd year. Mr. Garrard was born in Nelson and was educated at the Normal School and the Boys' High School, Christchurch. He was appointed a pupil teacher at the Richmond Road School, Christchurch, in 1883. Entering tho Teachers' Training College in 1887 ho matriculated in the same year and later graduated B.A. at Canterbury College. Ho was assistant master at tho Richmond and Kaiapoi

schools and later -was appointed headmaster of tho Papanui School, in which capacity ho served for nine years. In 1906 Mr. Garrard was appointed an inspector in the Auckland education district. Ho attained tho position of senior inspector in 1921. For the past three years he served on the Council of Education, being appointed by the Minister of Education.

Mr. Garrard had a highly creditable sports career, having represented Canterbury and New Zealand in cricket and Rugby football. In later years he took a keen interest in bowling and was a member of the Auckland Centre for 10 years.

During Mr. Garrard's term of office there were many changes in the education system of the Dominion and with an annually increasing school population his work did not become any easier. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Mr. D. R. Garrard, of Auckland, and Mr. W. R. Garrard, of Cambridge, both wellknown cricketers, and one daughter, Mrs. W. J. Smeeton.
