CRICKET CLUB'S PROTEST.

The Devonport Borough Council mot last evening, the deputy-mayor, Mr. J. Hislop, presiding. Strong exception to the proposal that a portion of the cricket ground should bo converted into two croquet greens was contained in a letter from the North Shore District Cricket Club. Tho matter was deferred until a meeting of tho council in committeo next Wednesday. The deputy-mayor reported that of tho £39,566 in rates struck for 1929-30 £4785, or 12.1 per cent., remained outstanding after penalty day, compared with £3833, or 9.62 per cent., out of £39,586 in 1928-29.

Tho Mayor, Mr. E. Aldridge, and (he town clerk were appointed the. council's delegates to tho annual conference of the Municipal Association to be held in Invercargill, commencing on March 5. Twenty-three building permits, involving £1895, were granted. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr. R. L. Cleiand and family on the death of Mrs. Cleiand. who took a prominent part in public work.
