INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
DECREASE FOR JANUARY.
AUCKLAND PROVINCE RETURNS.
There were 161 cases of infectious diseases in tho four health districts of the Auckland Provinco during January, according to tho returns furnished by the Auckland district health office. Scarlet fever accounted for 49 cases, diphtheria 30, tuberculosis 25, and pneumonia 15. There was a decreaso of 20 in the total returns compared with the December figures, cases of scarlet fever having decreased by 26. Tuberculosis decreased by one, and pneumonia by seven, but diphtheria showed an increase of eight. A total of 82 cases of infectious diseases was reported by Dr. T. J. Hughes, medical officer in chargo of the Central Auckland district. These included: Scarlet fever, 19; diphtheria, 12; enteric fever, 3; tuberculosis, 14; meningitis, 1; pneumonia, 7; erysipelas, 3; puerperal fever, 14; eclampsia, 4; ophthalmia neonatorum, 1; dysentery, 4. In the North Auckland and ThamesTauranga districts, 41 cases were reported as follows North Auckland: Scarlet fever, 11; diphtheria, 6; tuberculosis, 5; pneumonia, 2; erysipelas, 2; puerperal fever, 1. Thames-Tauranga health district: Scarlet fever, 6; diphtheria, 3; enteric fever, 1; poliomyelitis, 1; pneumonia, 1; erysipelas, 2. In the South Auckland district, Dr. J. Boyd, medical officer in charge, reported 38 cases. These included: —Scarlet fever, 13; diphtheria, 9; enteric fever, 1; tuberculosis, 6; meningitis, 1; pneumonia, 5; erysipelas, 1; dysentery, 1; food poisoning. 1-
