LEVEL CROSSING MENACE.

MOTORISTS CONCERNED.

PROPOSAL -FOR CONFERENCE

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] HAMILTON, Tuesday.

A proposal that a conference of motor organisations throughout New Zealand should be held to devise ways and means of obviating the menace of railway level crossings was carried at a meeting of the Hamilton agency of the Auckland Automobile Association last evening.

Mr. J. F. Strang said it could be fairly stated that level crossings presented the greatest danger to human life. It was suggested by the speaker that railway trucks and tarpaulins used to cover them should be distinguished by a white line. Mr. F. H. Clapham described the toll of life levied by railway crossing accidents as appalling.

Dr. F. 1). Pinfold said that from the point of view of the motorist the Railway Department was doing nothing to lessen the dangers of the level crossing.
