LECTURER IN ENGINEERING.

MR. GRAHAM BELL APPOINTED

The Auckland University College Council has appointed Mr. Graham Brook Bell to tho position of lecturer in civil engineering rendered vacant by the death of Mr. D. E. Harkness in the flying-boat accident off Milford Beach on December 12. Mr. Bell, who is 31 years of ago, was educated at tho Auckland Grammar School, where ho gained a junior university scholarship in 1915. He entered upon an engineering course at tho Auckland University College in tho following year, and from 1917 to 1919 studied- at Canterbury Collogc. He returned to Auckland in 1920 to fill a position as a designing engineer to the Auckland Harbour Board. Mr. Bell graduated B.E. at tho end of 1920, and two years later gained the degreo of B.Sc. In January, 1925, he was elected an associate member of the Institute of Civil Engineers. For seven years Mr. Bell was engaged with the Auckland Harbour Board, and in 1927 ho left its employ to visit Europe, where ho visited many large engineering works. On his return to Now Zealand in 1928 lie was appointed resident engineer at tho Onakaka Iron and Steel Works for tho installation of a hydroelectric power scheme which was recently completed. During his engagement with tho Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. Bell was for three years an instructor.at tho evening classes in tho engineering department of tho Seddon Memorial Tech. nical College.
