LAST POWER STOPPAGE.
DEPARTMENT'S EXPLANATION MATTER BEING RECTIFIED. An explanation of the electric-power stoppage which occurred on January 22 was received by the Auckland ElectricPower Board yesterday from tho district electrical engineer to the Public Works Department at Hamilton, Mr. T. MacLennan. He said that the interruption was due to a slip in the governor drive at Arapuni, as a result of which the speed of tho pendulum was low, causing it to open the turbine gates and produc6 excessive speed. The difficulty was overcome by paralleling the machines and allowing one unit to do tho governing of both, but that caused some loss of time and further time was taken in synchronising. The first opportunity was being taken to alter the governors to prevent tho possibility of any recurrence of the trouble.
"It is very interesting," was the comment of the chairman, Mr. W. J. Holdsworth, "but it does not count much with our large consumers when we have a serious stoppage." The trouble was that the Power Board was frequently blamed for shortcomings not its own.
