BOAT SWAMPED IN RIVER.
FAMILY'S NARROW ESCAPE. i GREAT ORDEAL FOR MOTHER. [Bt TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] PALMERSTON NORTH, Monday. Mr. T. Downing and his wife and three children, aged 16, 9 and 5 years, had a narrow escape from drowning in the Manawatu River yesterday afternoon. They were rowing in a flat-bottomed boat when one of the oars broke. The boat drifted on to a submerged snag and filled rapidly, the occupants scrambling on to the snag and being finally rescued by means of a rope and raft. Mrs. Downing was in the water for two hours before being safely landed on the bank.
