ANGLERS AT WHANGAROA.

TRIBUTE FROM A VISITOR.

Fishing at Whangaroa Captain Innes, of England, in' the launch Rosemary, landed the season's first hammerhead shark, which weighed 2751b. He also caught two mako sharks, of 2581b. and 2601b. respectively. Captain Innes said the mako displayed wonderful cunning and gave several spectacular leaps. Tho hammerhead shark was also surprisingly clever as a surface fighter, and in tho closing stages of the tussle was n/ost difficult to bring within range of the harpoon. "I am delighted with the sport," he added, " and since my arrival here, seven days ago, I have landed three distinct varieties among seven fish caught." Mr. Ji Seccombe, of Auckland, on tho launch Dione, experienced a brisk contest of one and three-quarter hours' duration in landing a fine black marlin of 3611b.

Fishing in the Russell deep-sea fishing grounds to-day Mr. White-Wickham, of London, in the launch Ozone, caught two swordfish. Tho first weighed 2521b. and took 1£ hours to land. It jumped from, tho water several times. The second fish weighed 2301b. and took 25 minutes to land. Both fish were hooked almost simultaneously, and Mr. White-Widkham was forced to have help in playing them. • (Yesterday's catches wpre: —Mr. Leander McCormick, of Chicago, swordfish, 2041b., launch Alma G.; Mr. Aubrey Fara, Sydney, mako, 3401b., launch Marlin.

MAKO OF 561L8. LANDED

A mako shark weighing 5611b. was landed by Mr. C. E. Preston, a member of a fishing party which lias returned from Mayor Island. Several sharks and swordfish were caught by the party.
