OTAMATEA COUNTY NOTES.

NEW MEMBER OF COUNCIL. [BV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PAPAROA, Thursday. The Otamatea County Council met yesterday, the •chairman, Mr. R. Coates, presiding. The statutory half-holiday for 1930 was fixed as Saturday. i ; In connection with the extraordinary vacancy in the Tokatoka Riding caused by the death of Mr. W. H. Fitness, Mr. W. 0. Thompson has been returned unopposed. Regarding the Tinopai post office, the Secretary of the General Post Office wrote stating that the council was now relieved of any further liability, on the guarantee. The Minister of Public Works wrote stating that he could not visit the district until later in the year. Nominations for the election of members of the enlarged Hobson ElectricPower Board, which will include the Hobson, Otamatea and Whangarei counties and Dargaville borough, close to-morrow and the election takes place on January 31. , . , The Main Highways Board advised that it would subsidise approved joint schemes arranged by local bodies for salaries of traffic inspectors on £1 for £1 basis. A traffic inspector is urgently needed in .Otamatea. In connection with the position which has arisen by the resignation of Mr. O. S. Da hi, assistant engineer, a sub-com-mittee consisting of Messrs. Hunt, Collins and the chairman was appointed to go into the whole question of county engineering. The reduction in Government grants may make a. curtailment of staff necessary.
