YACHT RACING.
RICHMOND CLUB'S REGATTA. OUTBOARD BOATS AT PANMURE. CRUISES DURING HOLIDAYS.'
BY SPINDRIFT,
The yacht, racing season which has been suspended on account of the Christmas and New Year holidays, will be resumed on Saturday when races will be held by the Richmond Cruising Club, the Outboai'd Division of the New Zealand Power Boat Association and the Takapuna Boating Club. The Outboard Association will hold its fixture on the Panmure Basin which will be used for the first time. It is an ideal spot for outboard racing, both from a competitor's and an onlooker's point of view. Six events will bo held, including races for B, C. and D class motors, and also a general handicap for all classes. The first race will start at 2.30 p.m. The Richmond Club's fixture will take the form of its annual regatta. Races will be held for all classes and in addition to the usual club events a five shilling sweepstake in each class will bo held for non-club boats.
The Takapuna Boating Club will hold a race for class Z and also a Cornwell Cup trial race. A meeting of boatowners and others interested in class Z will bo held in the clubhouse to-morrow evening for the purpose of arranging additional races for the class during the season. The weather during the holidays svas by no means favourable for cruising and many of the boats that went away got a severe "dusting." Generally speaking it was a case of getting under weigh during tho fine intervals and making for the next port of call while the weather was at all promising. In spite of tho conditions, however, a good many boats visited the Bay of Islands, Whangaroi, tho Great Barrier and Kawau. The majority of tho boats returned to town on -Sunday, but a number with more time at their disposal will not reach Auckland until next Sunday.
Tho Tauranga and Russell Regatta Clubs were favoured with fine weather for their regattas, but the Whangarei and Waiheke clubs experienced heavy rain for the greater part of tho day. At Whangarei the conditions were the worst the committoe has ever experienced for its annual fixture. The weather cleared at Cowes Bay, Waiheke, at 3 p.m., but by that timo all the sailing and launch events had concluded and only a few dinghy races remained to be decided. A large number of yachts and launches visited Cowes Bay, Waiheke, on New Year's Day. Among the yachts were tho following:—Janet, Eulalie, Iluia, Kestrel, Dorothy, Gloriana, Yum Yum, Mahoe, Mirage, Aurora, Curlew, Mystic, Valdora, Mawhiti, Manu, Wild Wave, Scud, Rita, Huia IL, Desdemona, Ranui, Malua, Wairere, Cyclone, Marie, Namu, Moa and Secret. The launches included Nyria, Adelaide, Loew Victor, Sunbeam, Lizzie G., All Bell, Gold Bell,, Papeete, Rosalca, Countess, Maibe, Maro, Scripps, Lola, Sea Gull, Manu, Wai-Lani, I'malone, Rowena and Gretehen. The yachts Huia, Doreen, Mahoe and Mirago cruised in company during the holidays. Among the places visited were Kawau, Leigh, Waiwera, Motatopu and WaiheKe.
The Akarana Yacht Club has placed its clubhouse at the disposal of the Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association during the contest for the Sanders memorial cup. The club has recently erected a slipway in Mechanics' Bay and access now may be gained to the clubhouso from either Mechanics' Bay or Judge's Bay.
