COST OF AIRSHIPS.
EXPENDITURE ON RIOO.
ADVICE OF SIR D. BURNEY,
(Received November 29, ' 8.15 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 29
At an address at a luncheon yesterday during the inspection of airship RIOO her builder, Sir Dennis Burney, said that at that moment she was lifting 100 guests and 30 toijs of fuel, Her cost was £450,000, to which the Government had contributed £300,000 and the Airship Guarantee Company had also spent £50,000 of its capital, which amounted to a heavy contribution toward aeronautical development. The Government could not expect engineering firms to make such contributions in the future. For example, the firm of Vickers had announced that it did not intend to undertake another similar contract.
Sir Dennis said he considered the Government's best course would be to lay down a five-years' programme, entailing an expenditure of £3,000,000. If it did so airships of real commercial value could be built.-
