HERBERT SMITH FUND.;
NUMEROUS- APPLICATIONS.
[BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON 1 . Friday. Si ne'e the publication a few weeks ago of the position of. the Herbert Smith Trust Fund, under which Messrs. C. B. Smith and R. English, of Hamilton, were N given authority to expend £IO,OOO in grants for trophies in order to promote the health of children by means of athletic exercises, over 80 applications for grants have been received by the trustees.
Tho applications are from all kinds of sports organisations and come from all over New Zealand. Primary and secondary_ schools, swimming clubSj s iife saving clubs, athletic bodies, Girl Guides and \ Boy Scouts, Y.M.C.A. branches, Caledonian Societies, gymnasiums, and municipal councils have been among the applicants. The trustees have had an exceptionally busy time in answering inquiries and making allocations. The grants approved during the last fortnight • total £SOO. < s
