REVIEW OF THE FIELDS

[BX TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT WELLINGTON. Friday.

A good deal of rain has fallen; but the Feilding course was hard and unless the weather remains bad the course to-morrow will bo ideal for racing. Fields, up to Metropolitan standard are due. Proceedings will open with the Waitnna Hurdles. The fact that Novar bled at Riccarton was due to her collision with a fullen horse and she should phow up well. Vivo, who is a. decided improver, should be in the picture.

False Scent should bo a good favourite for the Aorangi Trial Plate. On Avondnle .Guineas form' he looks to havo an excellent chance of opening his account.

A great field is due out for the Jubilce Cup Rabbi, who is a good favourite, may not "be as well suited by the course as Panther and Talisker. Great Charter back to form would be dangerous.

Pngunelli will seo a short price in tho Feilding Stakes, for which thcro will be only five or six runners. Ceremony has good credentials. There are somo useful horses in the ICowhai Hack Handicap. Make Up. who was unlucky at Levin, will be in demand, while My Own is a Botid and improving three-year-old.

Silver Paper is not expected to start irp the Flying Handienp, and his stable-mato Aspiring is one of the favourites. His fourth in the Stewards' Handicap at Riccarton justifies 'it. The Raider and Gold Cure, on their home course, are expected to go well. The improvers in the Fitzroy Hack Handicap are Limosin and Cuticle. Ivnightlike, for all his 9st., may not be far away at iho. finish. The concluding event should be a good race. Arikiuui and King Midas have Hie best recent form'. King Midas should certainly havo won ■ at Riccarton. High Falutin is the type to bo suited by this class of event.

ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.

" Inquirer."—Pegaway is seven years old. He contested 10 races during last season and won four of his engagements, viz.. Kirikirivoa Handicap, six furlongs (8.3); Christmas Handicap, one mile (8.7); Summer Cup, It miles (8.8); and A.R.C. Handicap, li miles (9.3). In the Grandstand Handicap, 11 miles, he carried 9.11 and was unplaced. " Constant Reader," Mararetu.—The following first favourites have won the Auckland Cup:—Templeton (1874), Ariel (1876 and 1878). Foul Play (1880), Welcome Jack (1882), Salvage (1883), Nelson (1886 and 1888), Crackshot (1890), St. Hippo (1892), Siege Gun (1902), Mahutonga (1904), In tho race of 1909 the bracketed pair, Downfall and 'Chauleuse, carried most money on tho totalisator, but All Red, who won, coukl be cited as the individual favourite.

A BRILLIANT. TRIO

LIMERICK, NIGHTMARCH, CHIDE.

BY PHAETON.'

„ The Dunedinites are hopeful of a meeting eventuating between Limerick, Nightmarch and Chido in connection with the James Hazlett Gold Cup, which event ia 6xed for February 15. Quito ,ft lot of things however, be expected to happen before the Dunedin Autumn Meeting comes round, and the fact of Limerick,! being out of training leaves something doubtful so far as ho is concerned. The race in question carries a money prize to the amount of £l5O, with a trophy of the value of i-300 added. The conditions are weight-for-age, with a scalo of penalties for' winners. Nightmarch and Chide have each incurred the maximum 10lb. . penalty, while Limerick's penalty is 71b. A meeting bel ween the doughty trio at Wingatui would invest tho Hazlett Gold Cup with a t:g dash of interest and it will- be pleasing to chronicle that tho Dunedin Jockey Club will again liavo the satisfaction of securing a noteworthy contest for the event named.

A GREAT SPORTSMAN.;

AGA KHAN IN ENGLAND.

In a recent note mention was made of the stakes won by horses owned by the Aga Khan in England during the present year and tho fivo preceding ones, which was computed at £174,618. Tho figures in*volved in the purchase of yearlings made by the Indian noblo., however, assume the colossal form. Taking jn the period only from 1925 to 1928, I found in jotting down the figures that he expenspd no less a sum than 107,720 guineas in the purchase of yearlings. The same may bo tabulated thus:

Yearlings Cost. Bought. Guineas 1925 ' : ' 5 31,300 192G ' ' .. . . 12 72,700 1927 .. .. 8 31,000 1028 ... .. 8 32,720 33 167.720 It has been said that the Aga Khan is tho richest prize that has ever como to breeders of bloodstock in the Old Country, and this can well bo believed.

MISCELLANEOUS 1 NOTES

TWO-YEAR-OLD RACES. The experiment of races for two-year-olds, with penalties for winners in place of handicaps, initiated at Sydney meetings this season, is stated to be a marked success. So far a- different winnfcr has turned up on each occasion, with good fields.

PAQOITO. Tlio accounts to hand from Canterbury bearing on Paquito give the son of Thurnham credit for having come through his racing in Australia in a manner proving that he is a horse of hardy constitution. Paquitq ip well engaged. at the Auckland Summer Meeting, and a. trip north is considered likely , for hint.

SERANG SOLD. Serang wilr race under different colours wheii next' he sets out on the race track, the ,full-brothor to Loyal Irish having been bought by Trainer E. \V. Lewis. Serang, who is by Absurd! from Moira-ma-Chree, cost 850 guineas, • but, though • he won a few races, he was a disappointment under favourable circumstances .both, in regard to ownership and treatment. is understood ■that Serang will bo given an opportunity to win honours as a hurdler, 'and it will be interesting to note his efforts over tho battens.

DISAPPOINTING HOYLAKE,

English-bred Hoylako continues to earn references to' his galloping ability on the training track, but we have to go back 12 months to find his namo among the winners, and, with sis unplaced performances entered against his name this season, be has proved ■an expensive horse to follow. Hoylako js stated to bo a horsp of moods, and possibly this may be interpreted in the sense thafr ho has sickened of racing.

NATIONAL YEARLING- SALES.

A LARGE CATALOGUE.

Messrs. "Wright; . Stephenson and Co., Ltd., tho originators of tho national yearling sales at Trentham, and who will again conduct their sales in conjunction with tho Sydney firm of bloodstock salesmen, Messrs. H. Chiaholm and Co., ' havo received a record catalogue of yearlings to Hiibmit at the January , Thirty* breeders, representing practically every province in the Dominion and extending from Southland to ;North/Auckland, are forwarding youngsters, so that, tho sale is a truly national one in its scope. Every leading stud in the Dominion isrented and youngsters, by the following, sires will como forward:—Lirnond, Chief Ruler, Hunting Song, Paper Money, Night Raid, Solferino, 'Pombal, Roßenor, Nijfger Minstrel, Colossus, Leigliton, Lord Que*, Psychology, Grand, court, Thespian, Tonbridge, Catmint, Lackham, Tea Tray, Weathervane, Arausio, Royal , Divorce. Polazel, Acre, Potoa, and Valkyrian, The quality and breeding of the youngsters this year reachesi a ve'ty high level, and a record has also been established for the number catalogued of full or close relatives to Derby, St. Leger, classic and other notablo winners. This year's catalogue is remarkable in the fact that well over 60 per cent, of the yearlings rank as colts. Chief Ruler, tho sire at the top of the winning list, has the largest representation. Seven colls and four fillies by him figuro in tho catalogue. Hunting Song, Limond, Paper Money, Tea Tray and Pombal are the sires of the strongest representation.
