CROSSING THE ROAD.
TRAFFIC SAFETY DEVICE.
Pedestrians .who wish to cross busy Manchester streets will, in future, be able to hold up the traffic by operating the automatic signals themselves. The signal will normally remain at green, giving traffic the right of way. A pedestrian wishing lo cross the road will press a button controlling the signal, traffic will receive the " caution " and then the " stop "-signal. The pedestrian will then cross the road, being allowed 15 seconds to do so.
There will be a press button on both sides of the street, as a guard against pedestrians continually crossing and holding uj) traffic, once a pedestrian has crossed the road and another wishes to cross, he must wait 45 seconds, which is allowed for traffic to pass. It has been decided to give the system a trial in certain one-way streets in the city.
