EXHIBITION OF WORK.
TRAINING COLLEGE DISPLAY.
ARTS "AND CRAFTS SHOWN
EXHIBITS FROM NORMAL SCHOOL
The annual display of work by students of the Auckland Training College was held at the college yesterday afternoon and evening. Large numbers of articles made by the students were set out for inspection by visitors. The purpose of the annual display is to acquaint teachers with the work being carried out at the college in all branches of arts and crafts. Handwork as a means for the expression of certain aspects of school subjects is entering more fully into the school syllabus. It has a definite place in the college course and, with its sister arts, it is resorted to in many ways.
The display this year was far more comprehensive and instructive than in previous years. In tho lower corridor of the college tables were set out displaying selected articles of copper, wood and tinware. Further articles and several fancypaper party dresses wore also on show in the corridor.
In one of the rooms on the ground floor a most comprehensive display of work was grouped. Among several interesting plasticinp models was one of the principal, Mr. D. M. Rae, whose expression has been ought in a most realistic manner. Varied articles manufactured from material tlittle commercial value were displayed. These included paper masks, fretwork, decorative jars, plasticine relief and clay wov'r. baskets, wire-work and sundry garments. Behind the whole' display lay the aim that apparently useless articles should be turned to good account. Simple models of weather-cocks and vanes were displayed in the science room. These were made by the students for assistance in the teaching of geography. Several interesting articles were displayed in two rooms on the first floor. Dresses made by students and examples of the sewing work of pupils attending the Normal School occupied one room. In the arts room special exhibits from the third-year students had pride of place. Paintings, chalk and pencil drawing and poster work were liberally displayed.
