THEFT OF TWO DRESSES.
TWO YEARS' PROBATION
The theft of two dresses, valued at £2 17s, from a city firm resulted in the appearance of a married woman, Minnie Mathews, aged 31 (Mr. Sullivan), before Mr. F. K, Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court. yesterday. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said accused had three children, and her husband had deserted her. She went to the shop on Thursday with a woman friend. They became separated and while standing near some dresses on display accused hid two beneath her coat. She was seen by an assistant and taken into an office and searched. She was in extremely poor circumstances and would not be able to pay a fine.
Accused was admitted to probation for two years, the magistrate warning her against similar Conduct in the future.
