AID TO AGRICULTURE.
EFFORTS IN ENGLAND.
England as a nation has been reproached for its backwardness in promoting and encouraging scientific agriculture, but it must not be forgotten that if the Government or the great educational institutions have, in the past, neglected the higher studies of agriculture, private individuals in England, Scotland, and Ireland have devoted much' time and much money to agricultural research and agricultural experiments, a.nd, during recent years, both the Government and the most ancient and famous educational institutions have given great attention and great sums of money for the encouragement of everything likely to assist farmers.
. In the past farming in nearly all its branches has been carried on at a high level in many parts of the British Isles, a fact duo to the intelligence of individual farmers, and particularly to the liberality and patriotism of some of the better class landlords, while from how onward this individual effort, backed by the State and by the old-established seats of learning, must lead to marvellous results. One of the most satisfactory features in British support of scientific agriculture is the fact that it is not only national but Imperial in its scope. Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia share in the benefits, and not only is this the case, but they share in the work, and with co-operation nnd co-ordination among such enterprising peoples all tho Empire, in fact all tho world, will be enriched.
