A by-election was held yesterday tor the Kilmarnock seat rendered vacant by the death of Mr. R. Climie. The poll resulted as follows: C. M. Aitchison (Labour) . . 18,465 Major C. Macandrew (Conservative) 13,270 Mrs. Brown (Communist) . 1,448 Labour Majority «* . . 5,195 At the last general election the result of the poll for the Kilmarnock seat was: R. Climie (Labour), 17,368: Major C. Macandrew (Conservative), 10,939; J. R. Rutherford (Liberal), 7700; Labour majority, 4037.
