SHOAL BAY AND THE BRIDGE.

Sir, —The causeways it is proposed to construct across Shoal and Ngataringa Bays, in order to give De.vonport. access to the harbour bridge, open the way to a simple scheme th\t would greatly improve the appearance of these bays and their utility for boating and bathing. It is suggested that as the incoming tide flows up the bays it should be impounded hy means of flood-gates in the causeways, so that it does not recede more than 10 per cent, to 25 per cent., according to the requirements of the Harbour Board. Ihe water would then be retained to at least three-quarter tide, and as only small boats use the upper reaches a small lock would suffice to give access to the channel when the flood-gates are closed. It can probably be arranged that, say, once a week or fortnight the tide is allowed to go right out, thus ensuring a completely fresh supply of sea water. After discussing this matter with many residents o. Bayswater I feel that such a scheme would meet the wishes-of a great majority, and the suggestion will be placed before the commission next week. W Blampiiid, President Bayswater-Belmont Progressive . Association.
