BOOKMAKER IN COURT.
HUNDRED POUNDS FINE.
SECOND TIME THIS YEAR.
RESULT OF POLICE RAID
For the second time this year a fine of £IOO was imposed in the Police Court on Saturday on Richard Francis Bennett, who appeared on a chargo of keeping premises at 25, Swanson Chambers, Swanson Street, as a common gaming-house. He was arrested as the result of a raid earlier in the morning by DetectiveSergeant McHugh and Detective Nalder. Frederick Jame3 Dryland was charged with being unlawfully found on the premises. Both men pleaded guilty.
Chief-Detective Hammond said that Bennett was beforo the Court seven months ago and was then fined £IOO. Ho had also been fined £25 in January for trespassing on tho Takapuna racecourse. There was no suggestion that lio was not meeting his obligations. Ho thought that Dryland had been in Court before also, but ho was not tho assistant. He was only found on tho premises, and was liable to a fine of £5. "Bennett has pleaded guilty, and has not told a lot of lies, so that can be taken into consideration; I would not think of imprisoning him," said the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt. He imposed a fine of £IOO on Bennett, allowing him until to-day to make payment. Dryland was fined £5.
