CANCER RESEARCH.
WORK IN SYDNEY,
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Tho journal of the Cancer Research Committee of the Sydney University, referring to investigations aiming at tho production of immunity against cancer, states that attempts to provent tho formation of tumours had given indications of success. It had been found that if fragments of spontaneous chicken tumours wero injected into rats they produced in tho serum of tho rat substances which killed not only cultured chicken tumour cells, but also cultures of mouse cancer colls. The scrum had been found harmless when applied to cultures of normal mouso tissues.
" It has been shown," the report adds, " that mere prolonged irritation will not produce cancer, but that some other factor is involved, tho exact naturo of which is not yet apparent. Further experiments on tho effect of tobacco smoko in tho i>roduction of cancer have been carried out, but so far it has not been possible to prove that tho smoko has any effect as an agent in producing cancer.
