FISCAL POLICY.
EMPIRE FREE TRADE. LORD BEAVERBROOK'S PLAN. CANBERRA, Nov. 22. The Minister of Customs, Mr. J. E. Kent on, commented to-flay upon Lord Beaverbrook's proposal for free trade within the Empire, lie said liio promoter of tlio scheme should make an attempt to put Britain's house in order before setting out to remedy tho position in t lie Dominions. The policy of the Federal Government, undoubtedly was " Australia first, Britain next, then the :isfer Dominions." It intended to revise the tariff in order to encourage the development of Australian industries. In contrast to that Britain bad allowed manufacturers from the cheap labour countries of Europe to establish themselves in the United Kingdom. As a result they could produce goods at a lower cost than could British manufacturers and they were enjoying a preference which certainly was not right.
