HENDERSON FUNCTION.

A successful effort to augment the funds of the Henderson Bowling and Croquet Clubs was made on Thursday afternoon and evening by a rose show and bazaar held in the Henderson Town Hall. Short speeches were given by Mr. G. Y. Canton, president of the bowling club, and Mr. W. R. T. Leighton, chairman of ihe Henderson Town Board. The opening ceremony was performed by Mr. H. G. R. Mason, member for the Auckland Suburbs. The exhibit of roses by Messrs. Cutler and Meikle, of New Lynn, and Mr. John Bush, of Henderson, was especially fine, and the flowers entered for competition by school children and adults were Worthy of commendation. The stalls for garden produce, fresh and preserved fruit, plain and fancy needlework, toys, sweets and cakes \vero well stocked with goods of excellent quality and good business was done.

A demons!ration of cooking by electricity arranged by the Waitemata Power Board attracted much notice, the cakes, scones, etc., prepared in this manner being much appreciated at afternoon tea. The various floral competitions, for which Mr. and Mrs. Cutler, of New Lynn, acted as judges, resulted as follows:—Decorated basket, children under 16: Norma Massev, 1; Grace Walker, 2. Decorated bowl, children under 16: Phyllis Ozich, 1; Kathleen Renrineay. 2. Best buttonhole, children under 16: Phyllis Ozich, 1; Norma Massey, 2. Decorated bowl, adults, Miss Ellis, 1; Mrs. Skeet, 2; highly commended. Mrs. Harold Wright. Decorated vase, adults only: Mrs. Bust,, 1; Mrs. Skeet,' 2. One light rose, open class:.Mrs. A. R. Pook, 1; Dr. Makgill, 2; highly commended, M. Cournane. One dark rose, open class? Miss M. Cournane, 1 : Dr. Makgill, 2. Three roses, different varieties: Miss M. Cournane, 1; Miss B. Cournane. 2; highly commended, Mrs. H. Wright. Six varieties of flowers, open class: Mr. B. Norcross, 1; Mrs. Harold Wright, 2; highly commended, Mr. 11. Norcross.

A pleasing feature of the show was the parade of boys and girlr., competitors for the most original fancy dress, the strikcolours and unique costumes provoking much interest. Awards were made as follows, Mrs. Hoskings being the judge:— Nellie Banks, a rose, 1; Baby Butler, .an old English lady, 2: Colin Lowe, a British soldier, 1: Jack [fogan. a cowboy, 2. Shooting, candle-lighting, and nail-driving competitions were also provided. This function was organised by the ladies of the croquet club in co-operation with the secretary, Mr. A. F. Massey, and the members of the bowling club. The proceeds amounted to approximately £45.
