THE TRANSPORT BOARD.

Sir, —As you have just been publishing a chorus of letters from correspondents who seem to imagine that all criticism of the Transport Board is sinful and premature, perhaps you will allow still another word or two. Can any of these people who say the board has not yet had a chance, can they tell us what difference there is in the control of the trams now, as compared with the period when the present chairman was, with the other City Council members, in full control of the trams ? If it can be shown that it is not the same crowd that are at present controlling the tram situation, then these anonymous correspondents are right—that is, the Transport Board has not yet had long enough for a fair trial. P. Alexander.

Sir, —During the past few weeks much undeserved abuse has been hurled at the city members of the Auckland Transport Board, because they, as business men, have seen fit to take steps to make ends meet. Perusal of much of the correspondence almost makes it impossible to dismiss from one's mind that many of your correspondents have been influenced in their efforts to decry the board members by motives not in the best interests of the residents of the transport area. What with the wrangling and hard words that have been said since the advent of unrestricted bus competition some five years ago surely now that the city no longer has a monopoly of transport, the board should at least be given a reasonable opportunity to run the system on business lines. I feel sure they will, if unharassed by the destructive criticism that has been so prevalent since the board came into being. It is high time the old feud between the city and outside local bodies was relegated to the dim and distant past. Mx. Edenite.
