RETURNS FOR LAST MONTH. DEEPENING OF THE CHANNEL. [BY TELEGR Aril. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.'] WHANGAREI. Friday. "Vessels entering the port of Whang&rei last month numbered 70, the total registered tonnage being 9888. The figures for October, 1928, were 86 vessels, with a total tonnage of 12,369. Imports by sea to Whangarei last month totalled 2065' £ tons, against 2989J tons in October, 1928. Exports last month totalled 13,059j{ tons, against 13,989£ tons in October, 1928. Tho total" revenue last month was £llß2 17s 2d. In October last year it was £IO4B 14s Id.
According to the report of the engineer to the Whangarei Harbour Board regarding the deepening of the channel, good progress has been made with the suction dredge below the sandstone bar. The length cut was 480 ft., and the quantity of spoil pumped ashore 14,200 cubic yards. The board has decided to substitute beacons for buoys as a guide to navigation in the channel," as recommended by the engineer in his report.
