EROSION AT ARAPUNI.

MAINTENANCE OF. SUPPLIES,

LOWERING OF LAKE UNLIKELY.

[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] TE AROHA, Tuesday. The position at the Arapuni hydroelectric works was the subject of a letter from the Minister of Public Works, Hon. E. A. Ransom, received at a meeting of the Thames Valley Power Board to-day. The board had written to the Minister asking whether proper notice had been taken of the early warnings, of the Arapuni engineers, of the impending erosion below the spillway. The board had also requested an assurance 'that adequate measures were being taken to conserve the interests of users of electricity. . - • -• . .■ \

The Minister said his department quite realised the importance of preventing any interference to power supplies, and had for a considerable time been preparing to cope with conditions. "My officers are of the opinion," wrote the Minister, "that it is extremely unlikely that they will have to resort to lowering the lake and cutting off the supply to carry out the protective works necessary on the overflow channel."

The chairman of the board said a recent visit to Arapuni had convinced him'that everything was going on well. There had been no further erosion of the overflow channel. 1
