BAN PLACED ON CLERGY.
DIOCESE OF LIVERPOOL.
DISOBEDIENCE TO BISHOP.
FORBIDDEN SERVICE USED.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received November 1, 8.25 p.m.) Times Cable. LONDON. Oct. 31. The Bishop of Liverpool, Dr. A. A. David, in pronouncing his ban on three of his clergy, used the following words:— " I hereby pronounce that our three brethren, by repudiating my authority, have set themselves outside our ministerial fellowship, and must there remain until by obedience they are again welcomed thereinto." The Diocesan Synod had agreed to the ban by 246 votes to 39. The clergy concerned, who are Anglo ; Catholics, are the Revs. Cyril Wilkins, John Derham-Mar-shall and Arthur Wykes, all of Liverpool. They had used the forbidden form for the Reservation of the Sacrament. When the bishop demanded the abandonment of the service, which was only applicable to the sick, they replied that on conscientious grounds they were unable to accept his regulation. The ban is the first synodical action on such grounds. The banned clergy attended the meeting of synod. Mr. Wilkins protested that the ban was illegal.
The Rev. Cyril Wilkins was at the Edinburgh Theological College, and was ordained in 1891. He has field curacies at St. Mathias' and St. Thomas' Toxteth, Liverpool, and was Vicar of Bolton-on-Dearne, Yorkshire. The Rev. J. A. R. Derham-Marshail was at St. John's College, Oxford, and Cuddesdon College. He was ordained in 1905, and was a curate at St. Michael's and Alt Angels', Bromley, and St. Michael's, Catnden Town, London. The Rev. Arthur Wykes was at London University. He was ordained in 1899, and held curacies at Merthyr Tydvil, Cardiff and Chester. He is Vicar of St. Stephen's, Edge Hill, Liverpool.
