POOR WIDOW HELPED.
SAD LONDON COURT. CASE. DAME NELLIE MELBA'S ACT. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. LONDON, Oct. 20. 'A kindly act on tho part of Dame Nellie Mclba was revealed to-day. On Friday at Paddington a widow, aged 68, appeared in Court for failure to pay her rent of 3s a week. Tho arrears were £l2. It was revealed that her room was spotlessly clean, and that tho widow was living on 8s a week earned by scrubbing floors. " This is one of the saddest cases in my experience," said the magistrate. To-day tho sceno was transformed. The rent had been paid with some pounds to spare, tho room was full of food, the fire was alight, tons of coal were available, and there was ono huge hamper packed with food. " A lady in a motor-car brought it," said tho widow. " Sho gave me this lovely letter, too, with £5 inside it.'' The letter read: "Dear Mrs. Towers, will you please accept this hamper? With good wishes from Nellie Melba." " I do not know tho lady," said tho widow, "but is she not kind?"
