While the gato receipts were less than last year, when tho meeting was held on Labour Day, tho Northlahd Trotting Club's ( meeting passed oft successfully and thero was an increase of £353 in tho totalisator investments. Like other country clubs that havo not been long established, the Northland Trotting Club has only derived a limited income from its meetings and there is not a great deal left over when all expenses aro cleared up. Progress from year to year is therefore slow, but tho club haß an enterprising executive, headed by Mr. L. J. Brake, and its future prospority should bo assured, for every year the meeting is becoming more popular rnd revenue is likely to increase in the coming aeasons, when the club will probably bo in a position to make ,tho gathering more attractive for thoso engaged in the sport. One of the most promising young pacer 3 seen out at tho meeting was Gumdigger. who won tho Dargavillo Handicap and finished second in the Kawakawa Handicap. His form waa very encouraging coiisidering that he had not raced previously, and ho can bo confidently expected to do belter ns tho season progresses. With an ounco of luck he might havo won both races/ and his performance in registering about 2m 19s to tho milo when ho finished second over a milo and a-auarter was oven better than hi 3 win. Gumdigger iB a five-year-old horso by Gold Bell from Sundial, henco a full-brother to Bell Dial and Gold Dial. Another novice paced to show promise was Mountain Princess, who finished Becond in tho Dargavillo Handicap and later turned tho tables on Gumdigger in winning tho Kawakawa Handicap. Mountain Princess is a fivc-ycar-old maro by Blue Mountain King from Princess Ena and ia therefore related to Enawah, whoso dam, Ena Bell, was also out of Princess Ena. Mountain Princess is moro solid than brilliant at present, but blio may bo suscep- | tiblo to improvement, for aho has. plenty of size and should benofit by Bomo racing experience. Without ever being good, Bho may prove useful in tho slow classes where tho opposition ia not strong. Backed down to a very cramped price, Paradigm was beaten into Becond place in tho Whangaroi Handicap through hie failuro to trot solidly early, his mistakes enabling Sweet Memory to get a long lead, which ho was not ablo to overtake. Tho bay trotter made amenda later, when ho trotted faultlc3Bly in tho President's Handicap and gavo nothing a chanco. Whereas ho only went 2m 28b to tho milo for a milo and a-lialf at hia first attempt, Paradigm registered' 2m 2Gs to the milo for two miles -in his winning effort, nnd thoro ia no doubt that ho would havo -won on tho first occasion if ho had not broken. Paradigm is not good, but ho will win moro rncea in moderato company. So solid was tho support for Vendomo in tho Northland Handicap that she wont out an odds-on favourite and aho, justified tbo confidenco of her backei'3 by winning Comfortably. Although slow to begin, Bbo was in tho lead with threo furlongs covered and was never afterwards headed. Sho skipped slightly when challenged by Explosion near tho but soon settled down again and had a length to sparo at tho finish. Voudomo was produced again in tho Hikuraugi Handicap, but she failed to show any dash, beginning slowly and skipping twico in tho early stages, lho black maro was probably not seen at her best on the second occasion and may soon make amends for tho failure. Sho may_ bo a good prospect off tho limit'in'tho Electrio Handicap at Alexandra Park on Saturday. On tho strength of a good track trial el do Beau was expected to win a race at the meeting, but she misbehaved herself at tna barrier and effectually settled her prbspects. She was at odds on m both uio Kawakawa Handicap and the'Kaikohe Handicap and, her defeats were therefore costly to bacKors. Although sho finished third in the milo saddle dash, sho was out of favour when she made her third appearance m the. Hikurangi Handicap and it was* just well lor her admirers that they did not entrnst her with any moro confidence, for she failed to do any bettor than in her previous outings. Nel de Beau ia a speedy maro, but, i unless Rhe mends her ways at tho barrier; she is going to bo a difficult proposition.
