UNIVERSITY COLLEGE.
EVENING LAW LECTURES. The Auckland University College Coun cil met yesterday, tho president, Sii Gcorgo Fowlds, presiding. A letter was received from tho president of tho Law Society stating that the society was unablo to mako any furthei commitments at present for the provisior of evening lectures. Mr. E. 11. Northcroffc said it was toe late for anything to bo dono this year, but he was anxious to havo tho systeir of lectures for law students reconsidered. Professor R. M. Algio was asked to report on tho matter, which was held ovei for consideration until tho next meeting. Reporting on the provision of facilities for science lectures in the College Hall, tho president stated that an expenditure of £l5O would bo involved, which he felt was not justified. It was decided tc take no action in tho matter. In reply to a request that, in tho cast of bequests'to the university or to the collogcs, estates should be free of deatt duty tho Minister of Education wrote stating that tho Government was unabk to accedo to tho request. The president reported that ho had received £SO from the Federation of University Women, the amount having beer raised by social functions in connection with tho college. The council was not tied down in its expenditure, but it was handed over with tho hopo that it would bo tho first contribution toward the construction of tho Arts block. It was decided to thank tho federation very heartily for its contribution. Advico was received from tho Ministei of Education that the Government had mado a grant of £IOOO toward tho cosl of erecting a caretaker's cottage. It was j decided to call for tenders immediately. Tho president and Professor A. P. W. Thomas were re-elected the council's representatives on the New Zealand University Council
