UNIONS IN AMERICA.
CONTRAST WITH AUSTRALIA. "NO USE FOR THE DRONE." The contrast in the relative strength of trade unionism in Australia and in the United States of America was remarked upon yesterday by Air. A. J. Cerrartl, president of a Sail Francisco wire manufacturing company, who is a through passenger by tlio Niagara, after spending a month in Australia. Trade unions were practically nonexistent in America, except in the building trades, he said. The attempt to mako unionism general had failed because the employers had fought it hard and also because too many of the workers realised that they could make more money without it. Tho survival of the fittest was tho principle followed there. "We have no use for the drono," Mr. Gerrard said. He said the cost of living relative to the wages love] was higher in Australia than in the .United States.
