OIL PAINTING.
Sir, —Northerners are often spoken of in Southern centres as being, weak in art because we have so few members, who use oil colours as a medium. It is probably true, for beautiful as water colours are, it is the oils that give richness and strength to an exhibition. This year's Sketch Club has half a dozen or so members who use oil as their medium, s.ni I venture to say if stsch good artists-'as' ' Robert Johnson, Robert Proctor or any other of the well-known artists in .oil were to examine the work shown, they would have quite a few words of praise for it. Oil is a difficult medium—give a little child a few paints and a cup of water and it will often show quite a good scheme of colour in its attempts, but give it oils and it invariably produces nothing but chaos. However,, in spite of neglect, my advice to the workers in oil is to Caret On. .
