OIL PAINTING.

Sir, —Northerners are often spoken of in Southern centres as being, weak in art because we have so few members, who use oil colours as a medium. It is probably true, for beautiful as water colours are, it is the oils that give richness and strength to an exhibition. This year's Sketch Club has half a dozen or so members who use oil as their medium, s.ni I venture to say if stsch good artists-'as' ' Robert Johnson, Robert Proctor or any other of the well-known artists in .oil were to examine the work shown, they would have quite a few words of praise for it. Oil is a difficult medium—give a little child a few paints and a cup of water and it will often show quite a good scheme of colour in its attempts, but give it oils and it invariably produces nothing but chaos.
