MARITIME CONFERENCE
DANGER OF BREAKDOWN.
SHIPOWNERS ALL WITHDRAW.
Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received October 13. 11.5 p.ir.) GENEVA. Oct. 12. The breakdown of the International Maritime Conference is threatened owing to the attitude of British shipowners in continuing to boycott, the conference as a protest against Mr. Ben Tillett, M.P., representing Britain. After heated discussions and several adjournments the delegates by 54 votes to 24 rejected the shipowners' motion of protest against the seamen's delegates being appointed by the Trades Lnion Congress instead of by the Seamen's Union.
The shipowners' delegates of all nations then withdrew from the conference. Captain Free has been refused l seat on the Hours Committee, owing to the probability of bis voting for the eight-hour day system. It is observed in Australia, but would not, suit European maritime countries.
