NOTES ON THE RACING.

SOME KEEN CONTESTS.

BY PICADQR

All started in tho Introductory Handicap and Paradigm was a good favourite over Sweet Memory and To Ngutu. Motumaoho broke up at the start and rofnsed to settlo down until losing all chance. Wild Downs led for a few furlongs and then Paradigm took charge. The race then developed into a procession, Paradigm leading for the remainder of tho journey to win pulling up by four lengths from To Ngutu, who defeated Wild Downs b.v five lengths. Sweet Memory was a poor fourth, followed by Temuka, Togo's Promise and Linnotfc tho Great. Paradigm was always trotting too solidly for tho others, who were a poor lot. The only ono of any class in the field was Linnott tho Great and ehe is not ready yet to show any form. Tho Frankton Handicap was a fair betting race. 1 with Mythorpo about £230 better backed than tho First Flight-Nel do Beau bracket, which had a slight call over To Waliia. Nel do Beau went rvw (smartly

fo lead early from First Flight Condor Bell, Kewpio's Guy and Mythorpo. "With ft lap to go Nol do Beau wa« out about six lengths from First Flight and Mythorpo with Conder Bell, Kewpie's Guy, Inverness nnd Peter Lloyd following. Nearing the homo turn' First Fliifht and Mythorpo closed up slightly, First Flight ooming away in the'straight to win easily by four lengths from Nol do Beau. Mythorpo was three lengths away third and Condor 801 l fourth. Next to finish wore Petor Lloyd, who was interfered with early and also broke on tho journey, Limosa and To Wahia. First Flight won well and gave the recentlyarrived English reinsman. F. J. Smith, his first win in tho Dominion. The winner and Nel de Beau were bracketed and thereforo there was only ono dividend.

Lindbergh Wins Easily. All .started in the Mark Memorial Handicap and Mountain Dell was made a pronounced favourite, with Lindbergh also heavily backed and Warplane best supported of tho others, who were at good prices. Great Peter and Mountain Doll were the early leaders, Mountain Dell showing the way past tho stand to Great Peter. Warplane, Goldman, Lindbergh and Tony Victor. With a mile covered Rockburn and Great Peter ran up to Mountain Dell and Lindbergh was also handy. Passing the eland the second time Mountain Dell was still in chargo, closely attended by Rockburn. Great Peter and Lindbergh, with Goldman and Warplane also prominent in a bunched field. Running out of the straight Lindborgh went into second position and three furlongs from home he was just on the outside of Mountain Dell, with Goldman tho only other with ft chance. Once in line for the post Lindbergh asserted his and came on to win easily by two lengths from Mountain Dell, who skipped when headed at the distance. Goldman was three lengths away third and Cornolian fourth, then coming Tony Victor, Great Peter, Oukhampton and Concertina. Lindbergh covcrod somo ground on the outside and his performance was meritorious. Mountain Dell had every chance and was beaten by a better horse. Favourite Falls.

Solid wagering on tho Hamilton Handicap saw Etta Colo a Rood favourite over Akenehi. who had a good call over Ivolmar. The field went away well, but Floraline Boon broke up badly, while Etta Colo and Akenehi also made bad mistakes early. Lackiewood had 'charge when they settled down and was the leader past the stand from Appeal, Gold Star, Kolmar, and Gold Sovereign. With a mile covered Gold Star broke and lost eome Ground, whilo Anseline moved up. Passing tho stand tbo second time Anseline just led from Lackiewood, with Appeal, Kolmar, Gold Sovereign, Gold Star (breaking), Peter McKinney and Etta Colo following. Gold Sovereicn ran into second position along_ the back and he was just in behind Anseline at the top, where Peter McKinney and Ella Cole both faulted when moving up fast. Onco tho homo run was commenced Gold Sovereign challenged and came on strongly to win by a length and a-half from Anseline, who beat Peter McKinney by three lengths. Etta Cole finished fast in fourth position and then camo Appeal, Kolmar and Lackiewood. Gold Sovereign was only soventh choice in the belting and was at a nice price. Ella Cole made several mistakes on the journey, only for which she would have won. *

Our Nancy's Surprise, An outsider in Our Nancy effected a surprise in the Claudelands Handicap, for which Polly'e Picture. Enawah and Explosion were the best backed. Hori Dillon refused to strike a gait at the start and Polly's Picture lost fully 60yds. before settling down. Bell Dial led for ii few furlongs. when Enawali took charge from Bell Dial, Our Nancy. Haerenga Pai, Explosion and Polly's Picture (who was making up her leeway quickly). Running along the back Polly's Picture continued to close up and when they passed the stand the second time she was in front on the outside of Enawah, with Explosion and Our Nancy, handy. Polly's Picture and Explosion drew away along the back and turned into tho top stretch clear of Our Nancy. Polly's Piclure turned into the straight just clear of Explosion and Our Nancy and in a good race up the straight Our Nancy beat Polly's Picture by three-parts of a length, with Explosion half a length away third. Bell Dial was a moderate fourth, with Haerenga Pai. Enawah and Hal Chimes following at intervale. Polly's Picture was unlucky to lose. Our Nancy returned a good doublefigure dividend.

Pearl Logan's Win. The Stewards' Handicap was a good betting race, with Vendorue, Pearl Logan and Mountain Dell heavily backed. Bawldy Locanda went out fast to lead past the stand from Hohora, Nella Dillon, Moko Peto and Pearl Logan. Thero was little change in the order along the back, although Brutus and Vendome wore moving up. Bawldy Locanda showed the way across the top. closely followed by Pearl Logan, Moko Pete. Nella Dillon, Mountain Dell, Brutus and Vendomo. Bawldy Locanda and Pearl Logan were the leaders into the straight from Brutus, Mountain Dell and Vendome. Pearl Logan had charge at the distance and won by half a length from Brutus, who beat the fast-finisliiiis Joy Bird by a head. Bawldy Locanda was another head away fourth, with Mountain Dell. Nella Dillon and Vendome right up. Pearl Logan is trained by C. Donald, wio compleled ft winning double in also winning tho principal event with Lindbergh.

A Good Finish.

For the President's Handicap Peterson was a solid favourite, with Etta Colo and Master Huia also well backed. Master Huia was slow away and Gold Star broke badly early. Wild Nut was soon in front and showed the way past the stand to Conder Bell. Peterson, Appeal and Bell Dial. Peterson took charge alone tho back and was tho leader past the stand tho second time from Wild Nut, Master Huift. Bell Dial, Floraline and Kolmar. There was little alteration in tlie leading positions along the back, where Etta Cole was movinz up on the outside. The field was in fairly close order across tho top and Peterson led into tho straight from Master nuia, Wild Nut, Floraline and 801 l Dial, with Etta Colo coming on tho outside. Peterson broke about GO.vds from tho poet and in a splendid finish Mastor Huia gained the verdict by a long neck from Floraline.' who beat tho fastfinishing Etta Cole by half ft head. Bell Dial was fourth, succeeded by Kolmar, Peterson and Anselino. Master Huia paced eolidly after losing some ground at the start, although he was lucky to beat .Etta Cole, who lost a splendid winning chance through a break in tho first mile. Good Favourite Wins.

Eight defections left M limners in the Visitors' Handicap, and Great Parrish was a good favourite, with J*el do Beau and Bello Axworthy also fancied. Nel do Beau, Bpllc Axworthy and Haerenga Pai lost a lot of ground at tho start. Boy and Nathaniel wero quickly prominent. Nathaniel leading past tho stand from Andover. Gold Cast. Great Parrish and Nella Dillon. Nathaniel showed the way along the back to Great Parrish, Nella Dillon. Andover and Gold Cast, with Nel de Beau running up fast. Nathaniel was still m charge crossing tho ton. closely followed by Great Parvish, Nel do Beau, l\ella Dillon, Dealer and Gold Cast. This order was maintained into tho straight, where Great Parrish came away to win with ease from Gold Cast, who beat Vanity Boy by a nose Nel do Beau was fourth, followed by Dealer, Andover and Nathaniel. Great Parrish won brilliantly, but might have had a harder race if Nel de Beau had left the mark correctly. x
